Critial Thinking - Is It OK to Choose a Little Good News?
Ann Murray wrote a song, “Little Good News” and the Refrain, “Sure could use a little good news today,” is resounding in my head today. My sister and I talked briefly last night about the recent barrage of emails pouring puke in her email box.
Many of the emails are offensive, off color, or just someone’s idea of a joke yet often contain filth and obscenities. She wanted to know if I felt her request to family and friends to stop sending these offensive emails was justified.
Isn’t it funny people are more willing to pass along an offensive email without thinking to everyone in their address book; yet they really have to stop and contemplate who would be receptive to an uplifting, heart warming and just plain good old human interest story.
Learning and using my critical thought process, I applied what I‘d learned so far to her dilemma. We weighed the consequences of her actions:
1. People who know and love You will respect the fact that You find this type of email offensive and stop sending it to You.
2. People who don’t care, will either continue sending smut, be offended You don’t find their humor “humorous” and fling their insecurities at You, or drop You as a friend altogether (I’d be thankful at this point).
3. Your enacting Your inalienable right to expose Yourself to that which brings pleasure and joy rather than negative and offensive emotions.
4. You stand up and hold strong to Your values and morals and wont allow others to tear down Your beliefs, self-confidence and love of Yourself.
5. Your agreeing to disagree without disrespecting others choices - choosing what’s right for You and knowing it’s not necessarily right for someone else.
I could not come up with any negative reactions in this critical thought process.
How many people accept situations in their lives, even though they may be offensive, due to fear of loss, or lack of self or lack of loving oneself? Doesn’t everyone deserve respect and consideration? Whose insecurities and fears and/or ignorance are You allowing to contaminate Your thoughts, values, and beliefs?
Who couldn’t use a “Little Good News” today?
I posted a story I’ve read before under the “Critical Thinkers” group in FB for anyone interested in a heart-warming human interest story. If Your not, don’t read it, after all it’s Your Choice.
